The first inhabitants of Germany were believed to be the Celts. German Tribes shortly followed them at the end of the 2nd Century B.C. The Franks; who were one of the tribes achieved supremacy in Western Europe. That was under Charlemagne who was the Holy Roman Emperor in 800 The Treaty of Verdun then came along and his land east of the Rhine was yielded to Prince Louis. Thre Treaty of Mersen then came in 870 and gave Germany the area it upheld through the Middle Ages. Otto the Great was crowned king for several centuries. These rulers were also the head of the Holy Roman Empire.
In the 14th Century Albert Hapsburg became the emperor. He ruled until its drop in 1806. The thirty years war was a fight over the succession to the bohemian throne. This left the empire divided into many small principals independent of the emperor. Eastern and Western Tribes left their native lands and settled in new territories during the second through the sixth century. This time period also included the fall of the Roman Empire and ended in a bigger area for the German people.
